Prison of Gandesa Monument · Gandesa, Terra Alta, Tarragona Medieval building in the old town of Gandesa, whose oldest façade, from the 13th-14th centuries, faces the calle del Castillo; it is believed to have been the palace of the receivers of the Order of the Hospital, following the seizure of Templar property in 1319. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was known as 'Casa del Delme', and also as 'La Quarantena', for collecting the tithes of the parish church there. It connected with an interior Gothic hall, crossed by three pointed diaphragm arches. Two storeys with a new façade were later built above the medieval level, and in 1841 it became the prison of the judicial district: the Gothic hall became a semi-basement cell. It kept that function until the 1960s, and was restored as a cultural facility between 1994 and 1995. Photo: Jisern (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Gandesa
