The Farsa of Gandesa Historical milestone · Gandesa, Terra Alta, Tarragona Image of Gandesa, not of the place itself. On 17 October 1319 the wedding was celebrated in the parish church of the Assumption of Gandesa, secretly arranged at the monastery of Santa María de Huerta (Soria), between the infante Jaime of Aragon, heir of Jaime II, and the infanta Leonor of Castile, only three years old, intended to unite the forces of both kingdoms against the Muslims. Once the vow had been fulfilled before the altar, the infante, who had already shown a religious calling, fled the ceremony leaving the bride stood up; legend says that in his flight he lost a glove, the origin of the town's coat of arms. Two months later, in Tarragona, he renounced the throne in favour of his brother Alfonso and entered the Order of Montesa. In 2014 the local theatre group La Farsa re-enacted the episode in the streets of Gandesa's old town. 1319 Photo: Antoni Cutrona (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Gandesa
