Archaeological site of el Barranc de la Boella Nature · la Canonja, Tarragonès, Tarragona The Barranc de la Boella site is located north of La Canonja, six kilometres from the coast and fifty metres above sea level, and has provided evidence of the earliest inhabitants of the European continent: flint tools and faunal remains around a million years old, with the oldest evidence of Acheulean technology in Western Europe. Known since the early 20th century and first excavated in 1970 by Salvador Vilaseca, who found remains of proboscideans, rhinoceroses, horses and deer, it was the subject of new campaigns from 2007, after a flood exposed mammoth molars and tusks, which confirmed its importance with remains of mammoth, hippopotamus and carnivores together with flint and quartzite lithic industry. 1.000.000-780.000 a.
