Fortress Tower of Sant Jordi d'Alfama Monument · l'Ametlla de Mar, Baix Ebre, Tarragona The castle of Sant Jordi d'Alfama is a fortress located at one end of the Gulf of Sant Jordi, in the municipality of l'Ametlla de Mar, beside an old Roman road. In 1201 Pere el Catòlic and Ramon de Montcada granted the site of Alfama to a group of religious men who organised themselves as a military order, recognised by the pope in 1373, on condition of building a convent and a hospital; around 1400 it joined the order of Santa Maria de Montesa. The old castle, according to a 1576 inventory, had a square body about 20 metres to a side with a tower serving as a watchtower. In 1650, during the Guerra dels Segadors, it was bombarded and left in ruins; its ashlar blocks were reused between 1732 and 1733 to build the present fortress, following the method of the engineer Vauban.
