Great Calçotada Festival of Valls Activity · Valls, Alt Camp, Tarragona The Gran Festa de la Calçotada de Valls, capital of Alt Camp, is held on the last Sunday of January and is one of Catalonia's most crowded gastronomic festivals, with more than 35,000 visitors in a single day taking part in the popular calçot tasting spread through the Old Quarter. Valls, the birthplace of this product, has cultivated the calçotaire tradition since the late 19th century, and the Gran Festa took shape in 1892 with the involvement of associations, restaurants and shopkeepers of the town; by the mid-20th century it became known thanks to the celebrated calçotades of the Penya Artística de l'Olla. During the day there are contests for growers, for the calçotada sauce and for eating calçots, in which in 2023 the winner ate more than 220 calçots.
