Castle of Cabra Monument · Cabra del Camp, Alt Camp, Tarragona Image of Cabra del Camp, not of the place itself. The castle of Cabra, which gives its name to Cabra del Camp, is documented for the first time on 27 September 980, when Count Borrell II of Barcelona granted it to Ervigi and his family; it was then the most advanced position in the line of strongholds defending the county during the conquest of New Catalonia. It may have been destroyed around 985 by the raids of Almanzor or, later, by the Almohads. It passed in 1011 to the monastery of San Martín of the Isla Gallinaria, and in 1285 Count Peter II bequeathed it to Santes Creus; between 1698 and 1702 it was bought by Cristòfor de Potau, count of Vallcabra. Today it is destroyed and its location is uncertain: traditionally it was placed at the top of the village, although recent studies place it at Castelltallat.
