Walled Enclosure of Salardú Monument · Naut Aran, Val d'Aran, Lleida The walled enclosure of Salardú is a set of ruined medieval defensive walls (Naut Aran, Vall d'Aran), declared an asset of national cultural interest. The castle of Salardú rises on the hill overlooking the confluence of the river Unhòla with the Garona, at the entrance to the Vall d'Aran by the Bonaigua pass, which explains why the site was fortified since ancient times and was the residence of a royal batlle. Only the church's bell tower survives, which served as a keep, as in Arties, Vielha or Vila. The castle had a square plan, with wall and counter-wall defended by two towers. Excavations in 1987 brought to light, next to the church, a necropolis with cist graves cut into the rock, from the 12th and 13th centuries.
