Landscape of the Bonaigua mountain pass Nature · Naut Aran, Val d'Aran, Lleida Image of Naut Aran, not of the place itself. The Bonaigua is a mountain pass in the Lleida Pyrenees linking the Val d'Aran with the Pallars Sobirà, in the municipality of Naut Aran. Its highest point reaches 2,072 metres, and it carries the road connecting Baqueira with Valencia d'Àneu, formerly the obligatory route to the Val d'Aran before the Vielha tunnel was opened. Because of its altitude and exposure to Atlantic storms, it remained closed by snow for much of the year. On the pass stood the Van Halen Cross, erected in 1841 to commemorate a treaty against smuggling with Andorra and destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, and the hermitage of the Virgin of las Ares gave shelter to travellers. Today the pass regularly features on the route of the Vuelta a España cycling race. Photo: Isidre blanc (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Naut Aran
