Church of Santa Maria d'Arties Monument · Naut Aran, Val d'Aran, Lleida Romanesque church southwest of Arties, in Naut Aran (Alto Arán), on an elevated spot where the castle of Arties also once stood, of which only a tower remains. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Asset of National Cultural Interest), it is a standard-bearer of Aranese Romanesque architecture. With a basilical plan and three naves, it preserves only the two lateral apses, with blind arcading and French chequerwork; the central apse was lost and has been rebuilt in modern times. The building, from the 12th century, late for Aranese Romanesque, preserves its original appearance well, especially in the apses and the north door. It has two portals: the main one, with six receding archivolts and chequered decoration, and another opening onto the cemetery. The Gothic bell tower is later, from the 13th-14th centuries. In 2012 its interior was restored. Photo: Alberto-g-rovi (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Naut Aran
