Castle of Nalec Monument · Nalec, Urgell, Lleida Image of Nalec, not of the place itself. The castle of Nalec stood on a hill in the valley of the River Corb, with good views towards Rocafort and Ciutadilla, and is today a monument declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). As in most of the valley's villages, the origin of Nalec is linked to a defensive tower turned into a castle and the centre of a lordship, documented since 1079 as a possession of the monastery of Ripoll and since 1082, the year the fortress was assigned to the monastery of Sant Pere el Gros de Cervera, a daughter priory of Ripoll. In the 12th century, through an exchange with Ripoll, it passed to the see of Vic, which enfeoffed it to various nobles; there were conflicts between the men of Nalec and those of the neighbouring castle of Ciutadilla over the use of the water of the Corb. Of the castle scarcely any remains survive, apart from arches and zoomorphic reliefs in later houses. Photo: Angela Llop (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Nalec
