Castle of Alcanó Monument · Alcanó, Segrià, Lleida At one corner of the plaza Mayor of Alcanó a large, heavily remodelled construction survives, corresponding to the remains of the old castle, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The interior was divided into two dwellings and preserves almost nothing of its medieval origins, except for one main wall; on the exterior walls, greatly disfigured, an ogival window and an arrow slit can be seen, and the original coping was left hidden when a wall was raised for a new roof. The place was resettled around 1203 by monks of Sant Ruf de Lleida, and by 1231 the castle already existed, its lord being Guillem Hug de Tolosa. After passing through different lords, at the end of the 15th century it came under the domain of the canons of the Seu de Lleida, who kept it until the extinction of the lordships in the 19th century.
