Sant Ramon Nonat, Mercedarian of Portell Historical milestone · Sant Ramon, Segarra, Lleida Image of Sant Ramon, not of the place itself. According to tradition, Ramon Nonat was born in the early 13th century in Portell, today one of the hamlets of the municipality of Sant Ramon, in the Lérida Segarra; he joined the Order of Mercy and devoted himself to ransoming captives in North Africa, died around 1240 and was canonised in 1657. His memory is venerated at the Sanctuary of Sant Ramon Nonat, which brings together a church, a former convent —whose oldest part dates from 1675— and a neoclassical cloister, popularly known as "the Escorial of the Segarra". In a chapel off the transept his mausoleum is kept, around which devotees walk three times, and every year, on the last day of August, the saint's feast day, the festival of the Tres Tombs is celebrated. siglo XIII Photo: PMRMaeyaert (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Sant Ramon
