Francesc Andreví, choirmaster Historical milestone · Sanaüja, Segarra, Lleida Image of Sanaüja, not of the place itself. The composer Francesc Xavier Andreví i Castellar was born in Sanaüja, in the Segarra, on 16 November 1786, the son of an Italian father and a Catalan mother; he began studying music at the age of eight in la Seu d'Urgell and at fifteen moved to Barcelona, where he studied organ and composition and obtained posts as an organist. He was chapel master of Santa María del Mar in Barcelona, of the cathedrals of Segorbe, Valencia and Seville, and of the royal chapel in Madrid from 1831, a post he left in 1836 due to disagreements with other musicians. Exiled in Bordeaux and later in Paris, he returned to Barcelona in 1850 as chapel master of la Mercè until his death on 23 November 1853, leaving six masses, a requiem mass, three Stabat Mater settings and other religious works. 1786-1853 Photo: Lineman (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Sanaüja
