Church of Sant Joan d'Isil Monument · Alt Àneu, Pallars Sobirà, Lleida The church of Sant Joan d'Isil is the Romanesque parish church of the village of Isil, in the municipality of Alt Àneu, situated half a kilometre to the south, beside the waters of the Noguera Pallaresa, one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in the Vall d'Àneu. It is first mentioned in 1095; some authors mistakenly considered it the seat of a Templar or Benedictine monastery, but its parish function is documented. It has a basilical plan with three naves and three apses, and its portal stands out, from the late 12th century, with archivolts on columns with capitals carved with human and animal faces, and a frieze of blind arches on the south façade, with two relief plaques of possible funerary origin. In the 14th century two Gothic windows were opened between the portal and the apse. Photo: Josep Renalias (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Alt Àneu
