Castle of València d'Àneu Monument · Alt Àneu, Pallars Sobirà, Lleida Castle situated east-southeast of Alt Àneu, on the old medieval site, moved down the slope in the 18th century; it stands at 1,108 metres between the Noguera Pallaresa and Bonaigua rivers, overlooking the valley of Esterri d'Àneu. It dated from the 11th-12th centuries, in the time of Count Sunyer I of Pallars, and served as a summer residence for his descendants down to the last, Hug Roger III, controlling in the 13th century the passage towards Aran and Occitan lands via the Bonaigua pass. Only ruins remain of it: it was the last fortress where the Pallars flag flew as an independent country. The scene of Carlist fighting in 1836, it was the last bastion defended by Caterina Albert before surrendering on 29 June 1491, bringing the county of Pallars Sobirà to an end.
