Castle of Orrit Monument · Tremp, Pallars Jussà, Lleida A castle of popular masonry, from the Romanesque period and built mainly in the 11th century, though with possible Carolingian antecedents, in the deserted settlement of Orrit, in the municipality of Tremp, whose remains crown the hill overlooking the village. Located where the Sopeira gorge begins to the south, on the left bank of the Noguera Ribagorzana, it was very important in the early Middle Ages, but declined after the year 1000 in the face of better-placed castles, such as that of Sapeira, which replaced it. It was the centre of a Roman pagus, a title used until 968. It was held by families from the Pallars, and in 1072 Artau I of Pallars Sobirà ceded it, together with Arén, to Ramón V of Pallars Jussà. Already in the 14th century it passed through various hands as a royal pledge, later joined to Talarn; it is known that in the 15th century it belonged directly to the crown, and in 1831 it was held by the García family. The base of a square tower measuring 4.1-4.75 m on a side and two rock-cut cisterns survive. Photo: Gustau Erill i Pinyot (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Tremp
