Vall Fosca Nature · la Torre de Cabdella, Pallars Jussà, Lleida The Vall Fosca is a Pyrenean valley of glacial origin located in the northern part of Pallars Jussà, through which the Flamisell river runs. It owes its name, “dark valley”, to the steep slopes of the mountains enclosing it, which let barely any sunlight reach the valley floor. At its head more than twenty high-mountain lakes gather, beneath peaks over 2,500 metres high, connected by tunnels that feed the Sallente and Cabdella hydroelectric power stations, the first built in 1914, a pioneer in the Pallars; today a hydroelectric museum can be visited at the Capdella power station, in the highest village of the valley, at 1,420 metres. It lives on mountain tourism, trout fishing and wild boar hunting, and preserves scattered Romanesque heritage, such as the church of Sant Vicenç de Capdella.
