Walled Enclosure of Balaguer Monument · Balaguer, Noguera, Lleida The medieval wall of Balaguer, built between the 11th and 12th centuries and rebuilt after successive conflicts, is a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and crowns the upper part of the town with walls, towers and gateways; a large part of the enclosure was demolished in 1894, when the gateways of Gerb and Sant Miquel del Pont disappeared, the latter considered one of the most beautiful town-wall gates in Catalonia. By the mid-9th century Balaguer was already an important city, presided over by the alcázar of La Suda, and its walls came to enclose the town as far as the river Segre; within them people lived until the 14th century, withstanding the sieges of 1228, 1280 and 1412, until in 1823 general Mina blew up one of its towers.
