Church of Santa Maria de Balaguer Monument · Balaguer, Noguera, Lleida Gothic church from the 14th century, the parish church of Balaguer, raised on a hill to the right of the river Segre that gives the city its characteristic silhouette. It has a very wide single nave, with side chapels between the buttresses and a seven-sided polygonal chancel covered with star-ribbed vaults; the interior receives light through the windows of the apse and the oculi of the nave. Work began in 1351 thanks to a donation of 30,000 sous from Peter the Ceremonious, and the church was consecrated on 24 February 1558, becoming the parish of Balaguer in 1575. After the disentailment it was used as a barracks and prison, first in 1836 and again in 1923 and during the Civil War. On the façade stands the Campanar del Moro, a pentagonal tower of earlier origin. Photo: Ainhoa from Catalunya (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Balaguer
