Convent of Sant Domènec de Balaguer Monument · Balaguer, Noguera, Lleida Old Dominican convent located outside the walls of Balaguer (Noguera), on the left bank of the Segre. Erected by testamentary disposition of count Ermengol X d'Urgell in 1314, the works did not begin until 1323 and were still unfinished in 1387; from 1323 a Dominican community lived there, until the disentailment of 1835. The church, Gothic, has a single nave with side chapels between buttresses and a seven-sided polygonal apse; its cloister stands out, built around 1333-1350 and very similar to that of Sant Francesc in Majorca, with four galleries of columns and pierced pointed arches. After the disentailment it was a hospital, was occupied by Jesuits (1862-1868) and since 1881 has been inhabited by Franciscans. In 1413 it was sacked during the siege against Jaume el Dissortat, burned in 1949 and is a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish state heritage-protection designation).
