Castle of Sant Llorenç d'Àger Monument · Àger, Noguera, Lleida Image of Àger, not of the place itself. A 10th-11th century castle complex atop a large crag, at the western end of the Montsec d'Ares mountain range, next to the chapel and the old settlement. It preserves the remains of a tower, of walls and of an 11th-century church, together with the ruins of a pre-medieval settlement and of a Visigothic church that still retains its four walls. After the Christian conquest of Àger, in 1034, Arnau Mir de Tost proclaimed himself in 1048 allodial lord of the valley and became the most important baron in the county of Urgell; the castle was then ceded to the religious community of Àger, documented as a fortress in 1068. In 1131 Viscount Guerau Ponç II de Cabrera returned the castle, which he had usurped, to the abbey of Sant Pere d'Àger; the place was already depopulated by around the 14th century.
