Castle of Puiggròs Monument · Puiggròs, Garrigues, Lleida A castle, later converted into a palace, crowning the walled village of Puiggròs, in the middle of the Urgell plain. It is documented from 1190, when Guillem de Cervera, castellan of Lleida on behalf of Ermengol VIII of Urgell, promised King Alfonso I not to cause him harm from the fortress he was building with his consent. At the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th, Joan Honorat de Montsuar and his wife Joana de Cardona transformed the old medieval fortress into a Gothic-Renaissance palace. In 1964 the last owner of the Vidal de Càrcer family sold the castle to Maties Ximenos, and since then it has belonged to the Ximenos family of Puiggròs. Of the original building very few remains survive, and these have been partly altered by modern construction. Photo: joan ggk (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Puiggròs
