Western Slope of the Aigüestortes National Park

Nature · la Vall de Boí, Alta Ribagorça, Lleida

Image of la Vall de Boí, not of the place itself.

Western access to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici national park, from la Vall de Boí. This side comprises the valley of the riu de Sant Nicolau and the head of the valley of the Noguera de Tor; between the estanys of Llong and Llebreta, the riu de Sant Nicolau forms the characteristic meanders that give Aigüestortes its name, which arose on former flats that once held glacial ponds. Among its lakes, Llebreta, Sarradé, Contraix, Llong, Mussoles and Ribera stand out, remnants of Quaternary glacial erosion, and its highest peaks are Comaloforno (3,033 m) and Besiberri Sud (3,023 m). Vegetation varies with altitude, from deciduous woodland to black pine forests and alpine meadows, with chamois, golden eagles and white partridges among its fauna.
