Church of Santa Maria de Cardet

The church of Santa Maria de Cardet is the Romanesque parish church of the village of Cardet, at the north-eastern end of the settlement, within the municipality of la Vall de Boí, and forms part of the group of Romanesque churches of the valley declared a World Heritage Site. Its construction, later than the early 13th century, was due to an undertaking by the monastery of Lavaix, lord of the place. It consists of a single nave with a semicircular apse and adapts to the slope of the land with two superimposed levels, the lower one semi-underground and stone-vaulted; the west façade is topped by a bellcote. The interior was heavily altered and the apse is today hidden by an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece; the original Romanesque altar frontal is kept at the Museu d'Art de Catalunya.
