Church of Sant Joan de Boí Monument · la Vall de Boí, Alta Ribagorça, Lleida Romanesque parish church of the poble of Boí, the historic centre of la Vall de Boí, to which it gives its name, in the Alta Ribagorça. Together with the other Romanesque churches of the comarca, it forms part of the group declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Built in the 11th century with three naves ending in three apses and a timber roof, today it retains only one apse and the bell tower, square in plan with Lombard decoration, which lost its three upper stages in a 13th-century fire. Its Romanesque mural paintings, now kept at the Museu d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, include bestiary themes such as camels, cockerels and fantastic animals, and a notable scene of the stoning of Sant Esteve.
