Castle of Banat Monument · Alàs i Cerc, Alt Urgell, Lleida Image of Alàs i Cerc, not of the place itself. Considerable remains of an 11th-12th-century Romanesque castle atop a hill between two ravines, square in plan, about 20 x 10 m, with fragments of opus spicatum visible in some wall stretches, though the interior is covered in rubble and vegetation. The place name Banat, documented since the 9th century, gave its name to Banat Sobirà; in 1255 Galceran de Pinós moved the castle to the Serra del Calbell, where a new settlement was founded, first called Calbell de Banat and, since 1290, Vilanova de Banat.
