Castle of Fornils Monument · Susqueda, Selva, Girona The castle of Fornils, documented since the 11th century, held jurisdiction over the parishes of Sant Martí and Susqueda, within a large castral district formerly centred on the castle of Fàbregues, which around the 12th and 13th centuries was divided between the castles of Rupit and Fornils, the latter dependent on the former. It belonged to the viscomital house of Cardona, which in 1310 bequeathed it to Sibil·la de Cardona, and in 1369 it was bought by Gilabert VI de Cruïlles, also lord of Rupit. The complex is centred on the keep, circular in plan, with two storeys, eight metres high, 5.75 in diameter and with a wall 1.25 metres thick, covered with stone vaults and pierced with arrow slits. Beside it, remains of other chambers are preserved, with walls between one and ten metres high. The complex has undergone restoration in several phases, the last completed in 2021.
