Castle of Campelles Monument · Campelles, Ripollès, Girona Image of Campelles, not of the place itself. Castle situated on a hill in the town of Campelles, of which only walled remains of circular layout survive, including an 8-metre-diameter tower, a cistern and a moat now fossilised into the terrain. The place of Campelles is already documented in 918 and 1035, although the castle did not yet exist at that time; it is believed to have been built later, during the wars between the Catalan-Aragonese Crown and the kingdom of Mallorca, when the place acquired a certain strategic value. There is no record of any feudal lord, nor is it recorded as a royal possession, which suggests it was more of a watch post than a proper feudal castle, and it remained in use until the 19th century.
