Roman Villa of Vilauba Curiosity · Camós, Pla de l'Estany, Girona Image of Camós, not of the place itself. The Roman villa of Vilauba, in Camós (Pla de l'Estany, Girona), lies about three kilometres south of Lake Banyoles. It is a site occupied between the 2nd–1st centuries BC and the 7th century AD, in three phases: the high imperial phase (1st–3rd centuries), the best documented, with a porticoed central courtyard, a residential area to the north and an agricultural one to the south; the late imperial phase (4th–5th centuries), with large wine and oil presses, before a decline in the 5th century; and the Visigothic phase (6th–7th centuries), of reduced occupation but with a residential area larger than expected. It preserves mosaics and structures, bronze figurines from a domestic altar, dining rooms with wall paintings, baths and presses, over more than 2,000 square metres on display. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2021, it can be visited today with explanatory panels.
