Croscat Volcano Nature · Santa Pau, Garrotxa, Girona The Croscat is an old volcano situated between the municipalities of Santa Pau and Olot, in the Garrotxa, and the highest in the Olot volcanic region, at 789 metres above sea level; its cone reaches 800 metres in diameter at the base and 160 metres in height, making it the largest on the Iberian Peninsula. It forms part of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of the Garrotxa, has a horseshoe shape and belongs to the strombolian category, the most recently formed of those studied in the comarca. The crater opens towards the west, at Clot Segolla, while on the north-eastern slope lie the Grederas del Croscat, a former aggregate quarry worked for 25 years that exposed the internal structure of reddish volcanic gravel that can be seen today. At the summit remain the ruins of an old defence tower. Photo: Carquinyol from Badalona, Catalunya (CC BY-SA 2.0) What to see and do in Santa Pau
