Sant Mateu de Vall-llobrega Monument · Vall-llobrega, Baix Empordà, Girona Sant Mateu Vell de Vall-llobrega is a Romanesque church situated at the head of the valley of the Vall-llobrega stream, in the Gavarres (Baix Empordà). Probably built in the 11th century, it is mentioned from 1280 and appears as a parish church from the 14th century. Set on a steep slope over highly plastic clays, it suffered stability problems and risk of collapse, until in 1669 approval was given to move the parish to a new church in the Raval de baix, leaving the old one abandoned. When its restoration began in 2011, completed in 2018, the building was in ruins and without a roof; the intervention repaired the walls and raised a roof of Arab tiles over wooden trusses. It is a temple with a single nave with a semicircular apse and a door with a double round arch. Photo: Bloguer (CC0) What to see and do in Vall-llobrega
