Great Beach of l'Estartit Nature · Torroella de Montgrí, Baix Empordà, Girona Image of Torroella de Montgrí, not of the place itself. Playa Gran de l'Estartit is an extensive sandy beach in the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà), facing the Illes Medes and the town's main bathing spot. It stretches for about three kilometres from the port of l'Estartit to the mouth of the Ter, describing a slight curve inland, and is divided into three sections: the main beach, next to the residential centre; platja dels Griells, next to the Ter Vell Natural Reserve; and platja de la Pletera, practically free of buildings, with a dune and coastal lagoon system well preserved since the area was de-urbanised in the 1980s. Its southern part is protected within the Montgrí Natural Park, and in 2010 it obtained the UNE 187001:2008 tourism quality certification.
