Ardenya-Cadiretes Massif Nature · Santa Cristina d'Aro, Baix Empordà, Girona Image of Santa Cristina d'Aro, not of the place itself. The massif of l'Ardenya, also called the Cadiretes-l'Ardenya massif, is a group of coastal mountains stretching between the comarques of La Selva, Gironès and Baix Empordà, with a maximum elevation of 518.7 metres at the Puig de les Cadiretes. It forms a barrier between the coast and the depression of La Selva, and includes peaks such as Montagut, Montllor, puig de Sant Baldiri and Montclar, within the municipalities of Tossa de Mar, Santa Cristina d'Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Caldes de Malavella and Llagostera. To the north it borders the Gavarres massif, and at its eastern end it drops abruptly to the sea, forming cliffs and coves between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Tossa de Mar. In 2004 a Plan for Areas of Natural Interest covering more than 7700 hectares was declared over much of its area, and this stretch of coastline inspired Ferran Agulló to coin the name Costa Brava.
