Castle and Walls of Rupià Monument · Rupià, Baix Empordà, Girona Image of Rupià, not of the place itself. A Catalan Gothic civil castle of the 14th-15th centuries, built of ashlar stone with a rectangular plan, together with remains of the walls that protected the centre of Rupià, in the Baix Empordà (Girona). Documented since 1128, when Guerau de Rupià is mentioned, it passed in 1268 into the hands of Bishop Pere de Castellnou, who bought the castles of Rupià and Fonolleres for 34,000 Barcelona sous. The noble floor retains a hall with diaphragm arches and Gothic windows, one of them trefoiled, as well as remains of a square corner tower. Today it is municipal property: it was repaired in the 1930s to house the town hall, and one can still see vaulted passages, stretches of wall and defensive structures integrated into the 17th-century farmhouse of Can Vilà.
