Walls of Peratallada Monument · Peratallada (Forallac), Baix Empordà, Girona Medieval walls (12th-14th centuries) surrounding the old town of Peratallada, with its characteristic moat cut into the rock. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), they formed a defensive system of three enclosures: the main one, with the castle-palace at its centre, and two others, acting as barbicans, to the north and east. The best-preserved sections are to the north and northwest, where the Portal de la Verge stands out, reached by crossing a bridge over the moat, along with the Torre de les Hores, square in plan, later adapted as a bell tower. The place name Petra tallada already appears in 10th-century documents, and the first documented lord of the lineage, Guillem de Peratallada, is recorded in 1039.
