Mill of Gualta Monument · Gualta, Baix Empordà, Girona The mill of Gualta, declared a bien cultural de interès nacional (a cultural property of national interest), is located within the village of Gualta (Baix Empordà, Girona) and is related to the type of the fortified mansion, possibly the old castle of Gualta, documented since 1220 and built in the 14th century with the authorisation of King James II. It retains an entrance portal with a voussoired round arch, a machicolation and arrow slits, and ashlar walls in its oldest part; in front of the façade stretches a large millpond for its milling function. The first reference to it as a mill dates from 1725, when it belonged to the count of Peralada and it worked as a flour and rice mill; by 1918 it also produced electricity, and between 1949 and 1959 it combined milling, an ice factory and a power plant.
