Santa Maria del Collet Monument · Calonge i Sant Antoni, Baix Empordà, Girona Santa Maria del Collet, also known as Santa Maria del Mar, is a hermitage located on a hill in the plain of Calonge, the remains of a small monastery of Benedictine nuns whose origins go back to the 12th century and which was built over an old Roman villa, the vil·la romana del Collet. Protected as a bien cultural de interés local (a heritage-protection designation at the municipal level), the religious community that inhabited it for centuries lived exposed to calamities such as piracy, plagues and poor harvests, to the point of being reduced at one time to a single nun. With the abandonment of the building, the use of the land passed to third parties and the old farmhouse became a residential mas. The town council of Calonge plans to restore it as an interpretation centre for the Roman ruins of Collet. Photo: Anleoc (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Calonge i Sant Antoni
