Calonge Village · Calonge i Sant Antoni, Baix Empordà, Girona Calonge is a medieval town in the interior of the Baix Empordà, in Girona, dominated by its castle, whose towers and walls date from the 13th century, although the fortress began to be built in the 8th century to watch for Saracen raids. Today it is half palace, half fortress, belongs to the Generalitat and can be visited. The municipality has been inhabited since prehistoric times and preserves remains of the Iberian settlement of Castell Barri and of a Roman villa with a foundry from the 2nd to 4th centuries. In the mid-18th century the parish church of Sant Martí was built, one of the largest churches in the diocese of Girona, and at the end of the century it became industrialised with cork-stopper factories. The vineyards of the DO Empordà surround the old quarter, and on the coast lies Sant Antoni de Calonge. Photo: Woundorf (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Calonge i Sant Antoni
