Greek colonists from Phocaea who came from Massalia settled around 575 BC on the islet of the Palaia Polis, today Sant Martí d'Empúries, and shortly afterwards on the mainland; thus was born the Neapolis of Emporion, the Greek trading gateway of the northeast of the peninsula.
