Santa Creu Fairs Activity · Figueres, Alt Empordà, Girona Image of Figueres, not of the place itself. The Fires i Festes de la Santa Creu are the main festival of Figueres (Alt Empordà) and are held for a week around 3 May, although the largest influx of visitors takes place on 1 May, the Labour Day holiday. Their origin dates back to 1419, when King Alfonso the Magnanimous established a fair that was to begin eight days before the feast of the Holy Cross, which over the centuries became the great regional fair attended by people from every village with their livestock; in 1819 a further day of festivity was added, the origin of today's Fires i Festes. Today traditional fairs of food, crafts, drawing and painting are still held, alongside activities such as the l'Embarraca't festival, the parade of giants and bigheads, and the election of the pubilla de l'Empordà.
