Castle of el Far Monument · el Far d'Empordà, Alt Empordà, Girona The Castell del Far, which gives its name to the municipality of el Far d'Empordà, is a former border castle declared Bien de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), of which only remains of the enclosure survive, integrated into later constructions in the hamlet. The best-preserved section, 38 metres long, is a sloped wall of unworked stone that borders the church of Sant Martí del Far to the south; it turns to the northeast in another section of which 17 metres survive. It was built in 1294, in the time of Count Ponç-Hug d'Empúries. In 1793, during the Guerra Gran, it was fortified by the Count of la Unión and later occupied by the French; during the Guerra del Francès it was fortified again and taken by Napoleonic troops, who remained there until 1814.
