Tower of les Creus (Castell de Sant Jaume) Monument · Cadaqués, Alt Empordà, Girona Fortress located on the Sant Jaume hill, above the old town of Cadaqués, with commanding views over the bay; today converted into a viewpoint and declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Its origin is not well known, although it was probably built in the 17th century; it was destroyed by the English and rebuilt by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, so the present structure dates from the 19th century. Square in plan, with four attached bodies in the manner of bastions, it preserves on two of its walls the coping of triangular merlons. Despite its appearance as a large tower, it never had a defensive function, but rather one of surveillance and signalling, and although it is often called the castle of Cadaqués, it is in fact a military structure distinct from the castle proper.
