Sa Encalladora Island Nature · Cadaqués, Alt Empordà, Girona The Illa de sa Encalladora, on Cap de Creus (Cadaqués, Alt Empordà), is the second largest island in Catalonia, separated from the coast by a small isthmus. It is about six hundred metres long and has a surface area of 5.5 hectares, with a maximum altitude of under 35 metres; its terrain is rocky, made up of schist and pegmatite. It is home to a freshwater pond and a notable halophile flora, with sea fennel, sea purslane and several species of limonium. It forms part of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, declared in 1998, and is protected as a strict nature reserve, separated from the mainland by the Sa Claveguera channel, about fifty metres wide, which shelters it from the north winds.
