Church of Santa Maria d'Agullana Monument · Agullana, Alt Empordà, Girona Romanesque church from the 12th-13th centuries documented since 1019, with the remains of the old baronial castle standing alongside it, formerly under the control of the bishopric of Gerona; it was declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 1984. It preserves a single nave with a pointed vault, a false transept and a semicircular apse decorated with a frieze of arcading finished in a sawtooth pattern, a motif repeated in the windows. The only door, on the south wall, is formed by six receding arches with reliefs and columns with plant-motif capitals, and the temple is topped by a wide two-storey cadireta bell tower. The five current bells, cast at the Barberí workshops in Olot, were installed between 1952 and 1968; the last, named Maria del Pilar, was donated by a private individual.
