Castle of Montornès Monument · Montornès del Vallès, Vallès Oriental, Barcelona Image of Montornès del Vallès, not of the place itself. The castle of Montornès, also called the castle of Sant Miquel, crowns a hill on the boundary between the municipalities of Montornès del Vallès and Vallromanes — the ruins of the castle lie on the Vallromanes side, and those of the chapel of Sant Miquel in Montornès —, from where the plain of the Vallès Oriental is commanded. Documented since 1108, it gave its name and lordship to the Montornès lineage, who held it for generations before it passed to several families, among them the Taverner and the Fiveller. The earthquake of 25 May 1448, with its epicentre between Cardedeu and Llinars del Vallès, caused major damage to the stronghold. Of the original building, which made use of the natural rock for part of its walls, only half of the circular keep and some stretches of wall remain standing today.
