Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Curiosity · Montmeló, Vallès Oriental, Barcelona The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, also called the Circuit de Montmeló, extends across the municipalities of Montmeló, Parets del Vallès and Granollers, in the Vallès Oriental, 32 kilometres from Barcelona. It was created to replace the outdated Montjuïc circuit: in the mid-1980s the RACC found suitable land at Montmeló, and with backing from the Generalitat the Consortium of the Circuit of Catalonia was formed in 1989. After moving a million cubic metres of earth, it was inaugurated on 10 September 1991 and, five days later, hosted its first race. On the 29th of that month the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1 was held, returning to Catalonia after sixteen years, and since 1992 it has also hosted the motorcycling Grand Prix, called the Grand Prix of Catalonia since 1996.
