After the revolt of 826 and the depopulation of the territory, Guifré el Pilós restored the county of Osona in 878 and the episcopal see was re-established in 886 over the former Roman Ausa. The new centre, Vicus Ausonae, gave Vic its name and fixed the capital status of the Plana.
