Church of Sant Pol de Mar Monument · Sant Pol de Mar, Maresme, Barcelona The hermitage of Sant Pol, or church of Sant Pol, is the parish church of Sant Pol de Mar (Maresme), a former monastery and fortified church declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It stands on a hillock facing the sea and today holds services only occasionally. It is a single-nave building with a slightly pointed barrel vault and a semicircular apse; in 1434 the apse was raised to fortify it, and in the modern era the nave was lengthened by adding a square tower topped by two bellcotes. The monastery, founded by Coptic monks, already existed in 955; it suffered pirate attacks in the early 11th century that led to its abandonment, and in 1068 Ramon Berenguer I granted it to the monks of Lérins, who at the end of that century built the current Romanesque building.
