Tower of Can Magarola Monument · Alella, Maresme, Barcelona Can Magarola is an old fortified farmhouse in Alella, in the Maresme, listed as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest, with an attached tower declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. Documented since 1359 as Mas Oller, it passed through several families until, in 1625, it came to Pere de Magarola i Fontanet, president of the Generalitat and bishop of Elne, Vic and Lleida, whose descendants gave it its name. Rectangular in plan, it is notable for the square tower on the southwest side, crowned with stepped battlements, with an arcade on the ground floor and a balcony with a chapel on the main floor; beneath the building is a cellar with large arches. Acquired by Alella town council in 1969, it housed the municipal museum until 2004 and today is the headquarters of the Alella Denomination of Origin.
