Malvasia de Sitges Curiosity · Sitges, Garraf, Barcelona Malvasia de Sitges is a sweet, full-bodied, aromatic and high-alcohol wine, typical of the Garraf region (Barcelona), traditionally drunk after local celebrations and xatonades. The malvasia grape, of which a black variety also exists, has a small, tender, oval berry, very sweet and aromatic, and is native to Greece: it is believed that the name derives from an Italian corruption of the Greek place name Monemvasia, from where it spread to Naples, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Sitges and other areas of the Mediterranean. In the Middle Ages it was credited with medicinal properties, and it is mentioned in the Tirant lo Blanc. Photo: No machine-readable author provided.
